Drone Dome

Well, if you’ve ever tried to keep drones in tip-top shape for any length of time during artificial insemination then you know how much a pain they can be. They are either too cold, too hot, underfed, etc. This box by Apis Engineering helps solve the problem. Sure, elaborate flight cages on top of a strong colony work but they too are a pain,

This box has two slides for managing the drones. I have successfully kept drones for 5 days in this device without any issues, The idea here is to let a group of workers do all the work. You simply place a couple of cups of workers in the bottom under the first slide and place the drones above the lower slide but below the top slide.

Note the bottom section has a feeder trough that can be filled from the outside (with liquid feed) but accessible only to the workers below. The feed trough can be filled with solid feed from the inside before the workers are installed. This is the preferred method. The workers feed the drones thru the excluder and the heat from the workers keeps the drones warm above. This top slide has a holder for a pedigree card if you are involved with a breeding program.

The drones are captured manually and transferred thru the small hole in the top slide. When it’s time to transfer the drones, simply place the entire box in your flight box and remove the top slide. The walls of the box in the worker section have small vents and the walls of the box in the drone section has worker escape sized holes.

Yes, there are many ways to handle drones, but you’ll find this and easy alternative,

You can also use this box to transfer queens that are in wooden cages. Just place the queens in their boxes below the bottom slide along with the required attendants. Feed the attendants when needed,
